How to create a barcode
- Pick the type: EAN-13 or UPC-A for a retail product, Code 128 for internal use.
- Enter the number or text; the check digit is calculated or verified automatically.
- Adjust the size and margins, then download the PNG or SVG.
- Before a large print run, print one copy and test it with a scanner or a phone camera.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make up an EAN or UPC number to sell my product?
No. To be accepted by retailers and marketplaces, an EAN or UPC must come from a company prefix issued by GS1. This tool draws the barcode for a number you already own; for internal use (stock, inventory, labels), Code 128 works perfectly.
What is the check digit?
The last digit of an EAN or UPC. It is calculated from the other digits and lets the scanner detect a misread. Enter the number without it and the tool calculates it; enter the full number and the tool verifies it.
What print size should I use?
An EAN-13 is normally 37.29 mm (1.47 in) wide at 100% and can be reduced to about 80%. Keep strong contrast (black on white) and a white margin on each side. Export as SVG for sharp printing at any size.
What is the difference between EAN-13 and Code 128?
EAN-13 holds only 13 digits and identifies a product at the checkout. Code 128 accepts letters, digits and punctuation: it is used for logistics, serial numbers, internal references and parcels.
