Good habits
- One password per site: if one site is breached, your other accounts stay safe.
- Length beats complexity: 16 characters or 5 words beat 8 convoluted characters.
- A password manager remembers everything for you; protect it with a passphrase of at least 6 words.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for your email and important accounts.
Frequently asked questions
Is the password sent anywhere?
No. It is drawn in your browser by the system’s cryptographic random generator (crypto.getRandomValues). Nothing is sent or stored.
What do “bits of entropy” mean?
The number of guesses an attacker would need, as a power of 2. Each extra bit doubles the work. Aim for at least 65 bits for an everyday account and 90 bits for a password manager or your email.
Password or passphrase?
A passphrase of 5 or 6 random words (such as Walnut-Comet-Drawer-Mill7-Frost) is as strong as a 12-character password and much easier to remember and type. Words are drawn from more than 1,000 common English words.
Why exclude look-alike characters?
I, l and 1, or O and 0, are easily confused when written down. Excluding them avoids mistakes when you have to copy or read out the password, at very little cost in strength.
